The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Supported Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Because my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for three years. A perk of the job was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
